Rolls-Royce Black Badge Turns 10: The Dark, Bold, and Uncompromising Alter Ego of Luxury

Celebrating a decade of Black Badge, Rolls-Royce redefines modern super-luxury with an aesthetic and performance revolution, from bespoke motor cars to global cultural influence.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars commemorates the 10th anniversary of Black Badge, the marque’s transformative alter ego that debuted in 2016. Over the past decade, Black Badge has set a bold template for modern super-luxury, influencing design, performance, and bespoke commissions across industries from gaming to street art.

Chris Brownridge, Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, explained:
“From the outset, Black Badge was created to welcome a new generation of clients into Rolls-Royce: individuals who express their success unapologetically and with conviction. This approach has made the marque relevant to clients who may never have previously considered it, and its aesthetic and experiential influence echoes throughout the luxury sector. We are excited to drive Black Badge’s further evolution in the years ahead.”

A Legacy of Rebellion and Individualism

Since its inception, Rolls-Royce has been defined not only by elegance, craftsmanship, and superlative engineering but also by a spirit of individualism and defiance. This ethos traces back to the marque’s founders: Sir Henry Royce and The Hon. Charles Stewart Rolls.

  • Henry Royce, overcoming poverty, illness, and a lack of formal education, became one of the world’s great engineers and was knighted for his achievements.
  • Charles Rolls, born an aristocrat and Cambridge-educated, chose the dangers of early motor racing and aviation, becoming a pioneer in both fields.

Both men were disruptors of their time, daring to challenge convention—a spirit echoed in Black Badge.

Early Precedent: 1928 Rolls-Royce 20 H.P. Brewster Brougham

Historians have traced the Black Badge aesthetic back to 1928, when a 20 HP Brewster Brougham was commissioned by J. E. Aldred, a founding financier of Rolls-Royce of America. The car’s Spirit of Ecstasy and radiator grille were finished in black, a bold choice at a time when polished chromium symbolized modernity and prestige.

Aldred’s motor car reflected the tastes of a cosmopolitan generation, expressing success through daring design—anticipating the codes that would later define Black Badge nearly a century later.

The First True Expression: John Lennon’s 1964 Phantom V

The spiritual ancestor of Black Badge emerged in 1964, when John Lennon commissioned a Phantom V in all-black, inside and out. Delivered by coachbuilders Mulliner Park Ward, the car featured:

  • Deep black gloss finish across bumpers and wheel discs
  • Black Bedford cord cloth interior with black nylon rugs
  • Darkened Triplex Deeplight glass
  • Fitted electric aerials, Perdio Portarma TV, seven pieces of black luggage

Lennon explained in a 1965 Rolling Stone interview:
“It’s for when you’re coming home late. If it’s daylight when you’re coming home, it’s still dark inside the car. You just shut all the windows and you’re still in the club.”

This Phantom V embodied uncompromising individuality, a subversive intent that became the blueprint for Black Badge.

A New Generation and the Birth of Black Badge

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

By the early 2010s, a new generation of entrepreneurs approached Rolls-Royce, seeking:

  • Exquisitely crafted products
  • Experiences reflecting dynamic, modern, and defiant aesthetics
  • A darker, more assertive take on luxury

To answer this demand, Rolls-Royce created Black Badge, a dedicated sub-brand with:

  • Vivid colours and technical materials
  • More powerful, agile, and sonorous V12 engines
  • Blackened Spirit of Ecstasy, Pantheon grille, and Double-R ‘Badge of Honour’
  • Infinity symbol marking Black Badge’s distinct universe

Engineered Darkness

Black Badge cars are coated in one of the motor industry’s darkest blacks. The process involves:

  • Atomising 100 lbs (45 kg) of paint onto the body-in-white
  • Oven-drying, then applying two layers of clear coat
  • Hand-polishing for a high-gloss piano finish (3–5 hours)

Hand-painted coachlines, mirror-black chrome finishes for brightwork, and Bespoke wheels complete the dramatic design. Interior materials draw from aerospace aesthetics, including carbon fibre interlaced with fine aluminium threads, cured and hand-polished to perfection.

Physical Vapour Deposition darkens metal surfaces, ensuring durability and preserving the luxurious Black Badge aesthetic over time.

The Black Badge Canon

Black Badge officially debuted in 2016 with Wraith and Ghost at the Geneva Motor Show. Highlights include:

  • Goodwood Festival of Speed 2016: Black Badge Wraith recorded one of the fastest timed runs ever for a Rolls-Royce
  • Dawn (2017) and Cullinan (2019) followed
  • Clients frequently commission vivid exterior hues from the 44,000+ colour palette or create bespoke finishes, inspired by nature, gaming, and art

Experiences surrounding Black Badge mirror the cars’ rebellious spirit, from private runway drives to immersive underground music events and dramatic handovers.

The recent Black Badge Spectre launch featured clandestine motor cars for select clients, reflecting both exclusivity and discretion, validating the brand’s most powerful vehicle yet.

The Rolls-Royce Legacy

With over 2,500 staff at Goodwood, UK, Rolls-Royce creates world-class handcrafted Bespoke motor cars. Since 2003, the company has contributed £5 billion to the UK economy, supporting sustainable growth and innovation. Black Badge, as an alter ego, has amplified the brand’s appeal to modern, adventurous collectors while redefining what it means to wield luxury with confidence.

Black Badge at 10 is more than a decade-long celebration—it is a testament to Rolls-Royce’s enduring commitment to innovation, craftsmanship, individuality, and rebellion, ensuring that the most daring expressions of success have a place to thrive.
