Are Your Cravings Really Yours?

By Karishmma Chawla

What if I told you that your biggest food cravings don’t actually begin in your mind?

Not in your willpower. Not in your emotions. And certainly not because you “lack discipline.”

Sometimes, the loudest craving for sugar, bread, or chocolate begins much deeper in your hormones, your gut, and your metabolism.

At our clinic, we don’t ask, “How do we stop the craving?” We ask, “Why is the craving there in the first place?” Because every craving has a story and if you listen carefully, your body is often telling you exactly where the imbalance lies.

Sometimes, that story begins with your blood sugar. One of the earliest signs of insulin resistance isn’t necessarily high blood sugar; it’s persistent cravings for sweets, bread, refined carbohydrates, or frequent snacking. Your blood glucose may still appear perfectly normal, but your pancreas is already working overtime, producing excess insulin to keep it that way. When your cells become less responsive to insulin, they struggle to utilize glucose efficiently, and your brain interprets this as a need for quick energy. The result? You find yourself reaching for sugar not because you lack self-control, but because your metabolism is asking for help.

At other times, the story begins in your gut. Your digestive system is home to trillions of microorganisms, and not all of them are working in your favour. When the gut microbiome is imbalanced, certain bacteria, fungi, or other microbes thrive on sugar and processed carbohydrates. Through the gut-brain axis, these microorganisms can subtly influence your appetite and amplify cravings, making you believe you’re craving that dessert when, in reality, your gut may be driving the demand. Sometimes you’re not feeding yourself; you’re feeding an imbalance.

Then comes conditioning. Sugar loves company it always wants more. Just like teasing your partner, one playful glance is never enough; it always leaves you wanting another. Cravings work the same way. The more you indulge them, the stronger they become. And remember, sugar is dessert for your unwanted gut bugs. The good news? Your taste buds can always be retrained to fall in love with real food again.

The encouraging news is that cravings don’t have to control your life forever. When you nourish your body with adequate protein, fibre-rich vegetables, healthy fats, quality sleep, stress management, and a healthier gut microbiome, your cravings gradually lose their intensity. The body begins to trust that it will consistently receive the nutrients it truly needs, reducing the constant demand for quick fixes.

Cravings are rarely random. More often than not, they are the body’s way of communicating that something beneath the surface needs attention. So, the next time a craving strikes, resist the urge to judge yourself. Instead, become curious. Your body may not be asking for another cookie it may simply be asking to be understood. Because healing doesn’t begin by fighting cravings. It begins by listening to what they’re trying to tell you.
